Catepillar readingPhonemic Awareness

Phonemic awareness is the ability to notice, think about, and work with individual sounds in spoken words.  Before children learn to read print, they must first understand that spoken words are made up of separate speech sounds, or phonemes.  Studies of reading acquisition have demonstrated that the acquisition of phonemic awareness is highly predictive of success in learning to read.

Levels of phonemic awareness

There is a sequence of phonemic awareness skills that children acquire at different developmental levels.  The following phonemic awareness skills, along with approximate age of acquisition, addressed in this intervention kit include:

Phonemic Awareness

  1. Sound Isolation (6 years of age)– When given a spoken word, the child can identify the position (beginning, middle, end) of a specific sound.  For example, “what is the beginning sound in the word ‘cat’?”
  2. Blending (6 years of age)- When given separate sounds spoken in isolation, the child is able to combine the sounds into its word.  For example, “/d/ (pause) /o/ (pause) /g/ make the word “dog”.
  3. Segmenting (6-7 years of age)- When given a word, the child is able to tell how many sounds are in the word.  For example, “mouse” has three sounds: /m/ /ou/ /s/.  Also, when given a word, the child is able to say each sound in the word.  For example, the sounds in the word “rug” are /r/ (pause) /u/ (pause) /g/.
  4. Phoneme Manipulation (7+ years of age)-  When given a word, the child is able to omit or substitute phonemes to make another word.  For example, “say the word ‘sand’, now say the word without the /s/ sound. (and)”; or “say the word ‘mut’, instead of the /m/ sound, use the /h/ sound (hut).”
